It’s SO hot out. Being in the air conditions hotel room, I
think we forgot how bloody hot is was outside. We quickly gathered our things,
packed the truck and made our way to climb in the Snow Canyon State Park in St. George. Our
wall of choice was the Circus wall – sport climbing. Perfect. We arrived and it
was in the shade!! Mountain Project, which has been my go-to when it comes in climbing info while on the run, says this:
'The crags are mostly good, but slightly soft sandstone, sporting crimpers, slopers, pockets and nice corners and a splitter here and there. There are also limestone crags to the south and to the west. There are walls facing in every given direction which can get sun or shade at various times of day, depending on which crag you are at.'
Climbing sandstone has been a weird adjustment, but I like it.
We spent most of the morning and early afternoon climbing. I
ended up freeing the first climb we chose, because apparently it was a mixed
climb. I had only brought sport gear with me, but I ended up needed a couple
Cams. It was an interesting start.
I think because of that, I was having a bit of head issues
for most of the day. All and all, it was stull fun and I learnt a lot about
building anchors and rope techniques.
We chose to quit around 1pm to grab lunch and move to
another wall to climb. As we packed up and drove, we changed our minds and
called it a day for climbing. It was just too hot and the wall we wanted to
climb was in the sunshine. So, we ran a couple errands, bought another Red
Rocks climbing book and headed off to Vegas.
We drove to Las Vegas in all afternoon – turned into a very long day, as it turned out,
the Red Rocks Campsite was closed and we needed to find a cheap hotel to stay
in. With too many U-turns and stops to McDonalds for internet access, we didn’t
end up finding a place ‘till around 10pm and slept in a Comfort Inn. Both of us
were very tired and hungry and not enjoying driving around a city all day. So,
the sleep was sound and the air conditioning felt good.
